Why Boston is an outstanding wedding location
Boston doesn't try to be something it's not. This is a town that knows its history — medieval trade, religious pilgrimage, and agricultural heritage have all left their mark — but it's not stuck in the past. The result is a wedding destination that offers genuine character without the inflated price tags you find in more fashionable locations. Couples who marry in Boston tend to be practical, family-focused, and more interested in creating a meaningful day than impressing a crowd.
From a filmmaking perspective, the flat Fenland landscape is genuinely unique. The wide skies, the straight roads bordered by dykes, and the big horizons create a sense of space and openness that translates beautifully to film. The Boston Stump provides a dramatic backdrop that's instantly recognisable, and the riverside and port areas offer texture and interest that you simply won't find inland. When the light is right — especially at dawn and dusk — this part of Lincolnshire can look extraordinary.
Boston and South Holland wedding venues
The Boston area has a growing number of excellent wedding venues, from historic buildings to modern hotels and countryside barns. Here are the ones I know well or am always excited to film at:
The White Hart Hotel
A historic coaching inn right in the centre of Boston, The White Hart is one of the most established wedding venues in the town. The building has character in spades — timber beams, panelled rooms, and a sense of history that no modern build can replicate. The function rooms work well for ceremonies and receptions, and being in the town centre means accommodation and transport are easy for guests. For films, the interior light is warm and atmospheric, and the central courtyard and nearby streets offer variety for portraits.
Fydell House
A stunning Grade I listed Georgian town house in the heart of Boston, Fydell House is an elegant and intimate venue that feels like a hidden gem. The rooms are beautifully proportioned, the staircase is grand without being overwhelming, and the walled garden is a peaceful oasis just steps from the town centre. As a videographer, I love the light here — the large sash windows provide soft, natural illumination, and the garden offers a green, private backdrop for portraits. It's a venue for couples who want sophistication on a smaller scale.
The Boston West Hotel & Golf Club
For couples who want a contemporary, all-in-one venue with excellent facilities, Boston West is a strong choice. Located just outside the town, the hotel has modern function suites, comfortable accommodation, and a golf course that provides attractive grounds for outdoor shots. The light in the main suite is clean and bright, and the terrace and gardens give me plenty of options for couple portraits. The team here is experienced and professional, which always makes the day run smoothly.
South Holland barn and countryside venues
Beyond Boston itself, the South Holland and Fenland district has a scattering of barn venues, country houses, and farm settings that are perfect for rustic or rural celebrations. The flat landscape might not have rolling hills, but it has wide skies, straight dykes, and fields that stretch to the horizon — all of which can look striking on film. Barn venues in this area tend to be spacious, light-filled, and surrounded by open land, which gives me room to work and captures the sense of place that makes a wedding film feel rooted.
St Botolph's Church (the Boston Stump)
If you're having a church wedding, the Boston Stump is hard to beat. One of the largest parish churches in England, it's an awe-inspiring space with soaring Gothic architecture, stunning stained glass, and acoustics that make hymns and readings sound incredible. Filming a wedding here is a privilege — the scale of the building, the quality of light through the windows, and the sense of history all add gravity and beauty to the footage. The churchyard and the immediate surroundings also provide excellent portrait opportunities, with the tower visible in the background.
Filming style in Boston and the Fens
My approach is documentary: present, unobtrusive, and focused on real moments. Boston weddings suit this style perfectly. The couples here aren't performing for a camera — they're celebrating with people they care about, in places that matter to them. That honesty comes through in the film, and it's what makes my work from this area some of my favourite to edit.
The Fenland light is distinctive. The flat terrain means the sun sits low and wide, creating long shadows and a soft, even quality that's ideal for outdoor portraits. Overcast days — common in this part of Lincolnshire — provide gentle, flattering light that works beautifully for skin tones and avoids the harsh contrast of bright sunshine. And when the sky clears at golden hour, the wide horizons mean the sunset spreads across the whole frame, creating genuinely cinematic moments.
Travel and coverage
Boston is approximately 65 minutes from Cleethorpes by road, following the A180 west to the M180 and then the A16 south through the Lincolnshire countryside. The A52 connects east to west, and the A17 links north to south, making the town accessible from Lincoln, Spalding, King's Lynn, and Skegness. For weddings in the Boston area, there are no travel fees — it's comfortably within my standard coverage zone, and the straight Fenland roads mean I can reach even rural venues efficiently.
Investment
One clear package for all weddings — Boston and the surrounding Fenland included. No travel fees, no hidden costs, no upselling. Just one filmmaker and a film that captures your day as it really was.
