For The Day

What to Do If It Rains on Your Wedding Day

If there's one thing British couples worry about, it's the weather. But here's a secret from someone who's filmed hundreds of weddings: some of the most beautiful, atmospheric, and genuinely romantic wedding films I've ever made happened on rainy days. Rain doesn't ruin your wedding — it just changes the mood. And with a bit of planning, it can actually make your day more memorable.

Umbrella in rain

Change your mindset first

The biggest factor in whether rain ruins your day isn't the weather — it's your reaction to it. Couples who shrug it off and embrace the rain always have a better time than those who let it dominate their thoughts.

Rain creates atmosphere. Moody skies, soft diffused light, reflections on wet surfaces — cinematically, it's gorgeous. Some of my most-watched wedding films feature rain, and couples always comment on how romantic it looks.

Have a plan B (but don't obsess over it)

Talk to your venue about their wet weather plan well before the day. Most experienced venues have beautiful indoor spaces for ceremonies, drinks receptions, and confetti moments. Knowing the backup exists means you can relax.

For outdoor ceremonies, ask whether there's a covered option or a marquee with sides that can go up. For confetti, a porch or covered entrance works perfectly — and actually concentrates the moment beautifully for photos and film.

Lighting and indoor portraits

Rainy days often mean soft, even light — which is actually flattering for portraits. Find an indoor spot near a large window with a clean, simple background. Doorways, entrance halls, and covered archways all work brilliantly.

If there's a break in the rain — even five minutes — your photographer and videographer should be ready to dash outside. Some of the most dramatic portrait shots come from those brief gaps when the sky is moody and the light is incredible.

The clear umbrella trick

If you do one thing to prepare for rain, buy a clear umbrella. They look stunning on camera — you can see the couple's faces, the rain creates beautiful texture, and the whole image feels romantic rather than practical.

A good quality clear umbrella costs under £15 and it might become the best prop in your wedding photos. Keep a couple of standard umbrellas for guests too, especially for the walk between ceremony and reception.

Practical essentials for a rainy wedding

  • Clear umbrella for portraits — romantic and photogenic
  • Spare shoes for outdoor sections — wellies can be fun too
  • Towels near the entrance for drying off
  • A backup confetti plan (covered porch or indoor space)
  • Hairspray and touch-up kit for humidity
  • Let your photographer and videographer know the backup locations in advance

What about outdoor confetti?

Confetti in the rain is actually magical on film — the petals mix with the raindrops and it creates this incredible, dreamy effect. If you can find a covered spot where guests line up and you walk through, you get the best of both worlds: sheltered guests, gorgeous footage.

If the rain is heavy, move confetti indoors or under a porch. It still looks fantastic — and the contained space often creates more impactful photos than a wide outdoor shot anyway.

Trust your suppliers

Your photographer, videographer, and venue team have seen rain before. Probably dozens of times. They'll know exactly what to do, where to go, and how to make the most of whatever the weather brings.

The best thing you can do? Trust them, stay relaxed, and enjoy your day. Rain or shine, the love, the laughter, and the celebration are what your wedding film will capture — and those things don't need sunshine to be beautiful.
